Varris Bahrzhev crept through the woods slowly, a bolt action rifle in her hands. She was hunting wild Daresh. Pretty dumb creatures all things considered, but they put food on the table. She crouched down and paused for a moment, listening. It was possible she wasn't the only hunter out there. Getting careless wouldn't do her any good. Lots of Vorskelkind died over the ages that way. A crafty Khorek beast was a terrifying adversary. A Ceresh wouldn't be that bad, it's just that they were sometimes in packs. The four legged buggers were mean, but at least they died easy enough.
Just as that thought crossed her mind she saw one of the things up ahead. It glanced straight at her. Its ears went back and then it took off. She gave a sigh of relief. Good thing a lot of them were skittish. Varris stood up into a high crouch and started moving again. She was mindful of every footstep. Stepping on a branch or something wouldn't help her. Maybe another kilometer and her favorite hill would come up. The Daresh herd grazed in the clearing it overlooked sometimes. She licked her lips at the thought of the steak she'd turn one into.
Then she heard a rustle of some bushes and stopped. She froze and crouched again. Her ears perked up and she listened closely. It was dead silent, which was wierd. You could usually hear the other animals even if they couldn't be seen. Spooky. She felt something was up and waited. Minute after minute went by but everything was still. "Get a grip, it's just nerves," she whispered. It's not, some part of her whispered back. Go home, now, this isn't good, that logical part said. "But I can't without a good haul," she whispered. Against her better judgement she started moving again.
The back of her neck practically burned. It felt like cold electricity she guessed. A chill went down her spine. Something was watching her right now. It was probably that rustle whatever it was. She went faster, maybe it'd go away. Yeah. She started to feel better after awhile. It was just nerves, thinking of predators. Nothing to worry about. This was not her first hunt. She would've seen anything sneaking up on her. Khorek beasts were big and noisy and tall. Besides, they werent in this neck of the woods. She knew these woods, nothing remotely like that lived here.
Another rustle of leaves whispered almost imperceptibly in the distance. Varris jerked and stared at her surroundings. Her heart was beating so fast. She took deep breaths, "Calm down." This is your chance, leave. She sighed and waited for awhile, longer this time. "I think it's gone." She got up and continued her trek. A wave of relief hit her at seeing the hill. Finally, she was going to get some Daresh. It was almost over.
Varris silently and carefully made her way up the slope. She crouched down and peered over. Yes! They were here like she had hoped. This trip would be worth it after all. She looked for her target, trying to spot a good healthy adult. She didn't like killing the little ones. They weren't worth it as of now. The Daresh were grazing and didn't as much as bat an eye in her direction. Occasionally a loud SNAP! was audible as a nut was cracked in the beak of a Daresh.
Just as she was taking aim a loud rustle sounded behind her. She whipped around and a dark shape filled her vision. Her finger started to tighten on the trigger. But the gun was slapped from her hands. A deafening crack exploded from the barrel but in the wrong direction. Something impacted her side and she spun, falling on her stomach. The gun clattered to the ground in front of her. Tragically it was just out of reach. "No!" she cried, trying to pull herself towards it. She reached for it, but a shadow eclipsed her. Her heart was beating out of her chest now, and her breaths were quick, short, and ragged.
Then something sharp pressed into her back. It pushed deeper and she felt a wetness spread on her back. It felt warm and slick now. The energy drained from her muscles and her breath stuck. It hurt so bad, it was the worst pain she'd ever felt. Her eyes filled with tears and her mouth opened to scream. But only a gurgling whimper left her lips. Her lung was filling with blood right now. She coughed and red fluid splashed the grass. She weakly looked up at the reptillian face. Those dark eyes didn't seem so souless for some reason. They seemed to display some sort of cool intelligence. They appraised her emotionlessly, looking like what she suspected she did when she finished off her prey. She didn't know if she was crazy or not but she swore she saw the expression soften nearly imperceptibly, and look almost... sad for a moment.
Her vision started to go monochrome and her field of vision constricted. Her neck went weak and her head fell. She couldn't move a muscle even if she wanted. The Khorek beast withdrew its finger claw. Then she felt it lift her. Her head was cradled between two clawed hands. Then she felt nothing as her head snapped to the right in a swift motion. CRRRK! The body went totally limp.
