Currently I am looking at a design plan to merge the Power and Propulsion branches and replace the standard tech system for the resulting merged branch with something unique to it: A system of Pure and Applied Sciences.
The plan I've had for this has been in development for a few months, but the idea is to instead of go by tier specifically, one researches branches of pure science (Aka fission research levels, fusion research levels, trying to master the science behind the technology steadily) and then researching the corresponding technologies to that science within the tier. To offset the "massive" number of technologies that'd likely be added as a result of this, chances are I'd make pure science free for starting civs, only charging tech points for the applied technologies. That way people can have whatever fluffy knowledge they want for their race - and just pay for whatever engine types they want their race to have unlocked.
This would not be a linear system unlike the current one, instead things will be designed to offer variety and build on different strengths behind technologies. That being said, some pseudoscience may be applied to create technologies that do advance in power as your scientific knowledge increases as a civilization. The replacement branch would not correspond to the rest of the tech tree's tiers most likely and thus be developed 100% independently of how the rest of the tiers are arranged, with only the science level determining what is available. I have not determined how transferring what currently exists over to the new system yet however.
I want to hear opinions on whether or not I should continue development on this design, because as stands - the Power/Propulsion branches CANNOT continue much further in development, and have to be replaced from the ground up by something. This is the replacement that has the most interest from me personally due to how easy it can be to expand it.
