I mentioned this on the chat, but here's a more concise version.
Every player commands a ship in one of two fleets in a battle. Each team has a fleet commander that gives orders to the fleet. The fleet commander is obviously in the flagship, usually the most powerful ship in the fleet. All players command a frigate or anything bigger than that. Patrol boats and strike craft are NPC's attached to player motherships and are commanded by the ship NCOs. In the main hardcore mode, there is permadeath but players are able to possess drones or strike craft after death. In other more forgiving modes players can respawn as their original ship.
When someone joins a game, there are several flotillas, in the place of squads in traditional FPS games. They have to choose a place in a squad. Each squad position is a ship class, so larger ships are more limited than frigates as far as numbers go. Commander is elected via voting and commanders can be evicted if enough people vote to do so. The commander's ship has more powerful sensors and can see everything other ships can see. Non commander ships can't do this. The commander's ship also has repair drones.
Everyone has a first person view from the captain of the ship. The ships have a fully modeled CIC/Bridge. Players see where their ship is going via the main view screen. They can switch to cameras on different parts of the hull at the press of a button. A holo table shows a more tactical view. When players are in control of fighter craft, they have a fully modeled cockpit.

I'd play it. It sounds like an interesting concept.

An awesome idea, but good luck coding it!

I would play the CRAP out of this game.
Two things you might want to take a look at that seem similar in concept:
Natural Selection II (Fusion of RTS/FPS elements with an engaging multiplayer.)
Space Battle (StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Arcade game, it follows a similar concept where players take control of various ships in a 'fleet' then square off to take down the other team's 'fleet' and 'space station'.)
I might also recommend putting up a kickstarter when the time comes to get this funded.
