Name:
The Beyonders
Government Type:
No official governing structure, though factions and groups form naturally with loose structures of their own.
Species:
The Beyonders are loosely descended from a species of humanoid stock, though the specifics are unknown. Due to the nature of their biotechnology and cybernetic capabilities, Beyonders do not have any one baseline bodyplan. Their bodies range from two-armed/two-legged humanoids to eight-armed cyborg cephalopods. Each Beyonder has highly personalized their collection of bodies, sometimes down to the chemistry itself.
Territory:
The Beyonders presently only hold influence over a single star system, Straumli Realm.
Culture:
The single unifying aspect of Beyonder culture is their intense wanderlust, driving them outwards from civilization to explore and create. Beyonders are individualistic and willful, but still more than happy to collaborate with like-minded persons. Thousands of cultures and ideologies have sprung up in the past, formed by like-minded wanderers. These sects of ideology have ranged from the archive-writing Librarians to the stubborn Imperialists, intent on creating a true interstellar empire. In the wake of the Butchery, these ideologies have been forced to re-evaluate themselves and their opinions of each other, if they hope to survive.
History:
Prior to the Butchery, the Beyonders had no unifying history. They were scattered across the stars, wandering artists and lost explorers. They knew no other life but themselves and those they descended from. They built great megastructures in their lonely corner of the galaxy, ferried their planetbound cousins to new worlds, and searched for meaning in their godhoods.
When at last First Contact was made, it was not a peaceful affair. Offering no words of threat or warning, the Butcher set itself to slaughtering Beyonder and planetbound alike, leaving burning worlds in its wake. The survivors, few and far between, fled to the nearest civilized stars, trying in vain to warn of the threat. In defiance of known physics, the Butcher arrived before them each time, finishing off those they had missed at the star before. Finally, driven to the last civilized system of their own, the Beyonders found peace. The remaining thousands of Beyonders braced themselves for the final killing, but it never came.
A decade has passed since then, and the Beyonders are once again looking to explore outside their bubble. To do so, they must unite and cooperate, at least in part.
