After playing too much Dragon Age Inquisition, I got back into fantasy. I've been trying to make my own setting. Fantasy with industrialized nations isn't a commonly seen idea. It's all medieval tech with magic on the side. I'm not going to follow that, my setting will be industrialized. Something like dieselpunk, probably. It'll take place on several planets, all linked by portals in the seas. Standard fantasy races like dwarves, elves, humans, and orcs will be in it. And it will include magic. Since all the portals are in the oceans, the only way to go between worlds is with oceangoing ships. So the portals are the sites of massive naval battles. There will be three different worlds, all in a triangle around a star. They're all kept equidistant and in the same orbit by the same magic as the portals. Beyond them is an asteroid belt, and some more worlds in the traditional orbits we see irl. There are some deities in the setting, and it's theorized that they, or at least one of them made the system how it is. This is because no mortal can match the power of the magic used.

Given I apparently forgot to actually type up the idea from before. I'll rethink it and retype it! IDEA HIGHJACKING TIME!
With your setting, The world at one point used to be whole. A hodgepodge of mages and scientists working together, a almost golden age of sorts. However there is some sort of apocalyptic level event likely stemming from mages becoming to greedy for power. This event causes a shattering of the world, fracturing the very land itself into small islands or micro continents scattered all over. Whats unusual about this is that as the world was shattered it tore through space itself, each new piece of land sitting on its own seemingly endless ocean. This was only furthered as the call of magic became weak to so many, and only topped by the technology of the world at whole collapsing with entire civilizations.
Not all was lost though as some of these remnants picked themselves back up, rebuilding from the ruins of the previous world. Separated as they were though the various island nations would find that sailing the seas led to no where other then an endless abyss. However as of recent a new breed of mage has appeared, one discovered mostly by accident. Farseeker mages or Navigators as they are sometimes called, They were discovered as individuals with a latent power to pierce the veil between the islands, bridging paths for ships to travel once again. These navigators though can only do so much on their own though and are quite coveted for the rarity. The ability to bring ships between the islands has caused civilization to begin to rise again, yet as anyone knows, with the return of civilization comes the return of war...The small island nations raging for dominance over each other to establish new nations.
